The Hellenic Maritime Museum organizes the exhibition “Konstantinos Volanakis: The painter of the sea returns to Piraeus”.
The exhibition presents 52 paintings from the collection of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, which is the largest collection of works by the leading Greek seascape painter. Also, the public will have the opportunity to admire important historical compositions, such as “The naval battle of Salamis, 1882”, from the collection of the Hellenic Navy Headquarters, “The Exodus of Areos, 1894” and “The arrival of Princess Sofia in Faliro 1889-1890” from the collection of Evangelos and Katingos Angelakos, as well as the emblematic work “The port of Piraeus from the royal pier, 1886”, from the collection of the Municipality of Piraeus.
At the same time, within the exhibition, visitors will have access to the online art gallery of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation (digitalgallery.laskaridisfoundation.org), which includes images of the paintings in high resolution, commentary by art historian, and bibliography, offering the possibility of audio browsing for the visually impaired.
The digital application of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation is the result of a subsidized program and is an example of an inclusive website, as it is designed so that its content is accessible to as many audiences as possible, without exclusions.
Committed to its founding values, but looking to the 21st century, the aim of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation is to create through digital art applications a portal for the dissemination and expansion of knowledge.
« .. Through this addition to the cultural map of the country, more and more people have the opportunity to experience the emotion caused by the works of Konstantinos Volanakis. Emotion that has a constant barometric from the first works of Munich to the last works of Piraeus. Because there may be variations in subjects, palette and even the signature of Konstantinos Volanakis, but the Doric beauty of his painting without “spikes of passion and extreme intensity”, as Manolis Vlachos observes, pervades his works from end to end. Volanakis constantly repeats and transforms his favorite subjects. The historical narratives, the beautiful harbors, the serene coasts, the sometimes calm and sometimes turbulent waters as well as the atmospheric nightscapes weave primarily the web of iconography that established Volanakis as the father of Greek seascapes.”
