The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, the Hellenic Polar Zones Society and the Laskaridis Shipping Co. Ltd, invite you to the conference on The first Greek scientific mission to the South Pole, on Monday, February 3, 2025 at 19.00, at the Historical Library (36, 2nd Merarchias & Aktis Moutsopoulou, Piraeus).
The topic is the research expedition to Antarctica of two researchers from the Laboratory of Changing Intelligent Environments (TUC TIE Lab) of the School of Architecture of the University of Crete, who studied how architecture can improve living in confined and extreme environments, with applications ranging from space to critical living zones on Earth. Christina Balomenaki and Efcharis Gourounti crossed with the research vessel “Saints Cyril and Methodius” the Drake Passage – one of the most difficult passages on the planet connecting the southernmost tip of South America (Cape Horn) with Antarctica (South Shetland Islands). They remained on the island of Livingston, in St. Kliment Ohridski Base, for the needs of their research mission until January 18.
The expedition to Antarctica was carried out with the contribution of the Ministries of Development and Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Hellenic Polar Zones Society and had as a major sponsor the shipping company Laskaridis Shipping Company Ltd, which covered the travel expenses of the two researchers, the supply of appropriate clothing and equipment, as well as their safety.
