The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation hosts the two-person exhibition “The Unknown Island“ by the artists Sofia Kyriakou and Lia Petrou, and invites you to the opening that will take place on Friday, May 24, at 18.30 at the Historical Library.
The exhibition invites the public to an adventure inside and outside the boundaries of the exhibition space. Their inspiration and starting point is the short story of the Nobel Prize-winning Portuguese writer Jose Saramago, The Story of the Unknown Island, a tale about the restless human spirit, persistence, and the act of travel as a research for the self and the utopia.
Focusing on the idea of the unknown island as a symbol of utopia, the exhibition explores the post-colonial landscape, migration and political geography, and highlights ecological concerns and identity issues, through embroidered artworks, ceramic constructions, strange jewelry and sculptural islands made of microplastics, as comments on consumerism and the destruction of the planet.
The exhibition begins at the Metro Station “Municipal Theatre” of Piraeus and develops in the Historical Library of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, where the works of the two artists converse with objects from Admiral Nelson’s collection and trigger associations around rare books, maps, compasses, bone ships and fragments from the collection of the Foundation.
