Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation-Listen to a book:

Listen to a book: "The adventures and the travels of Fredrika Bremer in King Otho’s Greece"

Discover the sound of writing, get acquainted with, and travel to a different – or not so – Greece!

Swedish Fredrika Bremer (1801-1865) is a significant point of reference in the history of travel literature. Liberal and deeply feminist – if that term is appropriate to be used for her times – leaves northern Europe in order to visit the prisoners in America and the free modern Greeks. Staying in Greece for several years, she travels all around the Greek kingdom, and delivers to us a unique diary.

Despite the abundance of traveling literature, up until today no recording of an original work exists. On occasion of the traveling library of Panagiotis C. Laskaridis, the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation innovates, offering almost the entire two-volume work of Fredrika Bremer. Emphasis is primarily given to the diaries regarding Athens and the islands of the Aegean Sea, areas which almost monopolize the interest of this traveler as well as of many modern travelers.

The aim of this initiative is double: on the one hand, to share the knowledge that accumulates in the libraries of the Foundation; and on the other hand, to bring the wider public, even those who cannot read the sources, close to writing and history. Through the audio clips that follow, we invite you to get acquainted with and travel to a different – or not so – Greece.
