Dimitrios Th. Kouretas (1901-1984) was a neurologist-psychiatrist and one of the pioneers of psychoanalysis in Greece. He was born in Tripoli. He began his medical studies at the University of Athens and completed them at the Military School of Lyon, where he also earned his doctorate. He worked at the 401 Military Hospital, where in 1935, he took over the management of the Psychiatric Clinic. In 1937, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the Medical School of the University of Athens, and in 1943, after resigning from the military, he became Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the newly established Medical School of the University of Thessaloniki, a position he held until 1948. From 1946 to 1951, he participated in the first Greek psychoanalytic group, which also included Maria Bonaparte, poet Andreas Embirikos, and psychiatrist Georgios Zevitzianos. In 1964, he was elected Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Athens and applied psychoanalytic methods at the Aiginiteio Hospital until his retirement in 1968. He wrote a large number of works on psychoanalysis.
