The library of literary critic Vasos Varikas

The library came to the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation in 2021 and is estimated to contain approximately 4,000 items. Thematically, it is dominated by modern Greek literature (including fiction, poetry, history and periodicals), and it is accompanied by archival material.

Biography

Vasos Varikas (1912-1971) was a literary critic and essayist. He was born in Aydin, Asia Minor, and grew up in Karpathos and Athens. He studied Philology at the University of Athens. In 1938-1939, he went to Paris where he attended art history courses and worked as a correspondent for the newspaper “Kathimerini.” He also collaborated with the newspapers “Ta Nea,” as a political editor, book and theatre critic, editor-in-chief, and editorial director, and “To Vima” as a book critic. He also served as the head of news bulletins and a literary associate for the Hellenic Radio Foundation. For a decade, he was the general secretary of the Committee for the State Literary Awards. His works include: “The Poet Kostas Varnalis” (1936), “K.G. Karyotakis, the Drama of a Generation” (1938), and “Our Post-war Literature” (1939). He also collaborated with literary magazines, and his reviews and essays have been compiled into monographs.
