Biography

Eleni Glykatzi-Arveler (1926) is a Byzantine scholar of international renown and the first woman to be elected Rector of the Sorbonne University. She was also Rector of the University of Europe. She was born in Athens. She studied at the University of Athens and worked as a researcher at the Center for Asia Minor Studies. In 1953 she moved to Paris in 1953 to continue her studies. She worked at France’s National Center for Scientific Research, where she later became Director. In 1967 she received the title of professor at the Sorbonne. She was the Director of the Center for History and Culture of Byzantium and Christian Archeology at the University of Paris 1, she was elected Vice-Chancellor of the Sorbonne University and in 1976 Rector. He is President and member of important European organizations. He has written numerous articles and monographs on the history of Byzantium and has given many lectures on the same topic in Greece and abroad. Eleni Glykatzi-Arveler is today considered one of the most prominent academic figures in Europe.
