Biography

Christos E. Dounis (1935-2010) was a Merchant Navy Captain, Vice Admiral, Honourary Chief of the Hellenic Coast Guard, and a prolific author with significant contributions to commercial shipping. He was a graduate of the Hydra Merchant Marine Academy (1955) and the Hellenic Coast Guard Academy (1960), holding a First-Class Merchant Marine Captain’s diploma. He received further training in the UK and Germany (1964 and 1974) on topics related to maritime safety and the organization and administration of maritime education. He served as Director of the Seamen’s Home and the Directorate of Merchant Ship Inspections and was appointed Consular Harbor Master in Rotterdam, Netherlands. In 1987, he was elected Chief of the Hellenic Coast Guard and was promoted to the highest rank of Vice Admiral. After his retirement in 1990, he was named Honorary Chief of the Coast Guard. He taught for over 30 years at the Higher Public Schools of Merchant Marine and the Hellenic Coast Guard Academy. His contributions to commercial shipping were substantial, particularly his efforts to upgrade maritime education and integrate it into the university level. He left behind a rich body of work, including more than 20 books and over 200 articles on maritime affairs, shipping, and maritime education.
