Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation-Discover the rare nautical collection of Panagiotis C. Laskaridis on your mobile phone, three-dimensionally!

Discover the rare nautical collection of Panagiotis C. Laskaridis on your mobile phone, three-dimensionally!

This application enables users to discover in an interactive way selected objects from the maritime collection of the President of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, Panagiotis C. Laskaridis. The collection was built up from the mid-1980s onwards, and today it is one of the most important in Greece. The collection counts more than 300 objects, including a number of rare scrimshaws (carved bones and teeth of whales or other mammals). The objects are presented in the app in 3D, but only after users scan the appropriate codes that are anything but foreshadowing what they will see. The drawings of nautical objects are deconstructed in pixels, in order to hide their actual form and arouse the user’s curiosity. When scanned with a mobile phone, the objects are revealed vividly on the screen, creating an interesting augmented reality experience. As the objects appear, the user can explore rich information about their history, function and significance, while audio clips complement the experience, providing another dimension of interaction, creating a sense that the user is participating in a live narrative that takes them into the world of maritime lore.

The app is available on the App Store and Google Play.
