Biography
Stelios Mayiiopoulos (1910-1995) was a literary figure and translator, primarily of Turkish literature. He was born in Neapolis (Neshehir), Asia Minor. He came to Greece in 1924 and settled in Thessaloniki, where he completed his studies. A fighter in the National Resistance, he was imprisoned by the Germans and later persecuted for political reasons. Thanks to his translations and related critical studies, the authors Nazım Hikmet, Aziz Nesin, and Arşan Kemal, as well as the stories of Nasreddin Hodja, became more widely known to the Greek public. He also translated Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex into Turkish. He was a member of the Society of Greek Writers.
