The library of Admiral Nikolaos Athanasiou

The library belonging to the Nikolaos Athanasiou family, along with the archives of Nikolaos, Georgios, and Athanasios Athanasiou, came to the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation in 2022. This collection comprises approximately 1,200 items primarily focused on maritime history and economics, with additional inclusion of 19th-century books and periodicals.

Biography

Nikolaos Athanasiou (1875-1953) was an admiral of the Hellenic Navy. Graduating from the Hellenic Naval Academy, he furthered his expertise by earning a specialization certificate from the Torpedo School in 1905. Throughout his distinguished career, he served on surface combatant ships, and held numerous pivotal administrative roles. His contributions were notable during the Hellenic-Turkish War of 1897, the Balkan Wars, and the First World War. Notably, during the German Occupation, he spearheaded resistance efforts, earning recognition with the Medal of Outstanding Acts.
